Three simple steps to better broadband

FAQs

  • Why is work happening on my street?

The vast majority of UK homes are still connected to an old-fashioned internet infrastructure, originally designed for telephones. This means that fibre-optic cable is used to the cabinet on the street, but copper cable is used between the street cabinet and the home, called FTTC or ‘Fibre to the Cabinet’.

Today, homes need a much faster movement of data up and down the network. The only way to get this is with a dedicated fibre optic cable to the cabinet, and from the cabinet direct to the home, called FTTP or ‘Fibre to the Premises’. That’s where we come in!

As a result of this demand for faster and more reliable internet, our sister company Grain Communications Ltd is working with a third-party contractor, installing the latest Full Fibre technology. Once installed, Grain Connect can give you access to a gigabit capable network, and a better choice for your broadband service!

  • How can I check if Grain is available in my area?

The quickest way to check availability is to use our postcode checker. Simply enter your postcode to see whether Grain Full Fibre is available at your address and compare the packages currently on offer.

  • What is Full Fibre broadband?

Full Fibre broadband, also known as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), uses fibre optic cables all the way from the network to your home. Unlike older broadband connections that rely partly on copper cables, Full Fibre offers faster speeds, greater reliability and improved performance for streaming, gaming, video calls and home working.

  • What is a pre-order?

If Grain isn’t quite live at your address yet, but we’re on our way, you can pre-order your broadband to secure a great offer price. We’ll honour that offer until your home is ready to connect.

Pre-ordering means setting up a Direct Debit, but don’t worry – we won’t take any payment until your broadband is installed. You can also change your mind at any time before installation.

Once your address is ready, we’ll get in touch by phone, SMS or email so you can book an installation date that suits you.

  • When will my pre-order likely be ready to go live?

When you pre-order, we’ll give you an estimated date for when Grain is expected to go live on your street. As our network build depends on contractors, suppliers and Local Authorities, timescales can change, so we can’t guarantee an exact date.

If anything changes, we’ll keep you informed. Once your street is live and your home is ready to connect, we’ll get in touch so you can book your installation.

In the meantime, we recommend keeping your current broadband contract until we’ve confirmed your installation date. And remember, you won’t pay a penny until your Grain broadband is installed.
