Switching from KCOM to Grain

Hull has historically had limited broadband choice due to KCOM’s dominant network presence, but that’s changing. Over the past few years, new Full Fibre alternative networks (altnets) like Grain have started offering genuine alternatives in many parts of the city. Residents now have access to more choice for speeds, flexibility, and contract terms than ever before. This page explains how the switch works specifically when moving from KCOM to Grain, while helping you decide if it’s the right move for your home or business.

If you’re thinking about leaving KCOM and switching to Grain, great choice! Here’s how to cancel your KCOM service and make the move without any hassle. Because our network is fully independent, you don’t need to arrange a same-day switch—you can keep both providers running side by side to avoid any downtime during installation.

Package speeds are pushed direct to your router over our Full Fibre network. Some speeds may not be achievable by a single device over Wi-Fi, and a wired connection will always deliver the best speeds. FAQs about switching from KCOM

Still thinking about switching?

Every property is different, so it’s natural to have questions before changing broadband provider. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from customers moving from KCOM to Grain.

  • How long will it take to activate my service?

Once your router is installed, the process to switch on your package happens straight away, meaning you can start enjoying your new Full Fibre broadband connection in no time! Our engineer will let you know if there’s anything you need to do.

  • Can I keep my existing phone number?

Yes, we should be able to transfer your current number to our network, however you will need an active account with your old provider and an active Grain account to do this.

All you need to do is submit your transfer request, simply get in touch with our support team. Our team will then arrange the transfer. Please note: it can take up to 22 days to receive the number from your old provider, so please contact us as soon as possible to ensure we can make the transfer.

Once we have received the number from your previous provider, only then should you cancel your account with them. This is because your old account needs to be active for us to retrieve your number.

  • How do I switch to Grain?

Switching to Grain is as easy as 1-2-3:

Check: Enter your postcode into our postcode checker to see our available speeds.
Choose: Select the Full Fibre plan that fits your needs and complete your checkout online. Ensure you input your existing broadband account details when prompted!
Connect: We manage the switchover from your existing provider, ensuring a smooth transition with no complicated cancellations required from your side.

  • Will I lose internet while switching?

Because Grain operates its own Full Fibre network, many customers are able to keep their existing broadband connection active until their Grain installation has been completed, helping minimise disruption.

  • Do I need to contact KCOM to cancel?

If your switch is completed using the One Touch Switch process, much of the switching process can be managed automatically.

In some circumstances, you may still need to contact KCOM directly, for example if you’re cancelling additional services.

  • Will I need to return my KCOM equipment?

KCOM may ask you to return your broadband equipment once your service has ended. Check your account or contact KCOM for the latest return instructions.

  • Is Grain available where I live?

Grain’s independent Full Fibre network is available to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the UK. Check your postcode to see whether your property can connect.
