How to save money on your broadband

Choosing your next broadband provider can be difficult. Between annual in-contract price rises, hidden installation costs and worrying about lengthy call queues if something goes wrong, finding a good deal can be exhausting.

If you’re looking to reduce your monthly bill without sacrificing speed and service, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a no-nonsense guide to saving money on your broadband bill.

TL;DR summary

To save on broadband, check when your current contract ends, compare the total cost rather than just the introductory price, and make sure you’re getting the speed and service you actually need.

If you’re switching, check what’s available at your address and look out for special offers, like our current September deal offering up to 9 months half price deal*.

Check when your current contract ends

Ever noticed how your bill seems to get bigger the moment your contract ends? It’s not a coincidence. One of the easiest ways to avoid paying more than you need to is knowing when your minimum contract period ends.

Once your initial deal comes to an end, you may move onto your provider’s standard or out-of-contract pricing, which can be higher than the price you started with.

Make a note of your contract end date and start comparing your options before it arrives. That gives you time to find a new deal and understand whether any early termination charges could apply.

And don’t just look at the first number you see.

Compare the total cost, not just the headline price

A broadband deal advertised at £25 per month might not actually cost £25 for the whole contract.

Before choosing a package, check:

  1. The monthly price – What you will actually pay each month
  2. Any introductory offers – Any welcome offers and how long the discount lasts.
  3. In-contract price rises – Some providers increase your price in-contract by up to £4 per month, each year. That could be an extra £8 per month on a 24-month contract.
  4. Installation or activation fees – Any upfront or unexpected costs
  5. Contract length – How long you’re due to be committed for
  6. Unnecessary extras – Whether you’ll be paying for any extras you don’t want or need

The cheapest looking deal isn’t always the cheapest looking deal.

Don’t pay for speed you don’t need

Faster sounds better. Usually because it is.

But there’s no point paying for more speed than your household will ever use.

A couple who mainly browse, stream and shop online probably don’t need the same package as a busy modern household with multiple people, numerous devices, high usage and smart home technology.

Think about how many people use your connection, what they do online and how many devices are connected at once.

And remember to look at upload speed, not just download speed. Upload speeds matter for video calls, sending large files, cloud backups and gaming.

Consider Full Fibre broadband

If you’re still using a partial fibre connection, it could be worth checking whether Full Fibre is available at your address.

Full Fibre uses fibre all the way to your property, rather than relying on copper for the final stretch of the connection from the street cabinet to your home. This means faster speeds and improved capacity for households with lots of connected devices and demanding online activity.

And Full Fibre doesn’t mean it’s paying more. Check your postcode to see if Grain Full Fibre is available at your address. We’re unbeatable on price, with symmetrical speeds up to 2000Mbps (depending on availability).

Don’t choose on price alone

A cheap broadband deal isn’t much of a bargain if you’re spending every evening restarting your router.

Before you switch, look beyond the monthly price and check:

  • Technology – Is it Full Fibre?
  • Price increases – Can the cost change during your contract?
  • Upload speeds – Is it suitable for how you use the internet?
  • Data – Is it unlimited?
  • Support – How easy is it to contact the provider?
  • Extras – Are you paying for more features than you need?
  • Reviews – What do existing customers say about the service?

The aim isn’t necessarily to find the cheapest broadband deal.

It’s to find the best value deal for how you actually use your connection.

Don’t assume you’ll be rewarded for your loyalty

Sticking with the same provider for years is convenient. But it’s still worth checking what you’re paying.

Broadband providers often use introductory pricing to attract new customers. Once that offer ends, your monthly price may no longer be as competitive.

At Grain, we price match. Customers can use our Price Match Guarantee at the start and end of their contract. This means you’re always guaranteed the best possible price for your broadband, whether they’re a new or renewing customer. Find out more.

So, what’s the best way to save on broadband?

Start with what you’re paying now.

Check when your contract ends, work out what your current deal really costs, and compare it with what’s available at your address.

Don’t be distracted by a big introductory discount if the price rises significantly later. Don’t pay for more speed than you need. And don’t forget to compare the things that affect your experience after you’ve switched, like upload speeds, Full Fibre technology and customer support.

The cheapest broadband deal isn’t always the best value.

But with a little bit of shopping around, you could find a better connection for less.
